Using Loom - Draw on iPad, Record on Laptop

Loom has been a popular screencasting / recording tool in our district.
It has been a quick-win in our instructional technology PD work.

There have been several requests to have Loom on iPad behave like Loom on laptop.

"I like how Loom works on my laptop, but I want to have a touch-screen for my teaching."

We can do that.. and more, with a little setup.

You will need:

  •  iPad:  Set up your lesson.  I recommend using Keynote for lesson work.  Do not 'play' it full screen for the lesson.
  • iPad charger cord:  You will connect this to your laptop.  A USB adapter may be needed.
  • Laptop:  You will need to have the desktop version of Loom installed.
You will also be using Quicktime, which is already on your laptop.

1. Connect up your equipment:

2. On your laptop, Open Quicktime. Create a New Movie Recording

Change your camera source from the Facetime Camera to your iPad name.
(Your iPad name may look something like   'Staff - First.Last')

3. Prepare your lesson on the iPad.  Keynote is a big winner here.

4. Open Loom on your laptop.

Here are the Loom settings I recommend for your laptop.

                - Make sure the microphone is selected.
                - I recommend selecting 'Custom size'.

5. Select Start Recording

-Select just the part of the screen that will have your lesson on the Quicktime window.
-Wait for the countdown to begin.
-All of your actions will be done on the iPad.  The audio and video will be recorded on your laptop.
-Select Stop when you are complete.  It  is the red square on the left side of your recording window.

Let me know if you would like to learn more about using Loom for your classroom.

Updated on 11/30/2020:

There are other wonderful similar uses of Quicktime for remote learning.

Below is a really nice video post of how to use Quicktime for a screen recording, but saved to the computer rather than saved to Loom's cloud.  These may be uploaded then to a different streaming service, such as YouTube.

This was created by GMS Science Teacher Ms. Sis.

Apple School Manager

Apple School Manager is an online resource that teachers use to manage class rosters for Apple Classroom and Apple Schoolwork.

Classroom works on iPad and laptop.  Schoolwork is for iPad only.

This is a change from past practice, where teachers would manage rosters from the Classroom App.

Teachers log into Apple School Manager at the website school.apple.com using their district Apple ID.

Every student and staff member has a school Apple ID.   This same login connects to everyone's 'managed' iCloud account, too.

Let me know if you have troubles getting logged in.

Once in, you can do a refined search for your classes by selecting the circle icon to the right of the Search Bar.

Please check to make sure that you have all of your correct classes listed.
Let me know if you need any classes added.

You can also check by simply opening the Apple Classroom app like you have been used  to.

You can Edit your own classes as necessary, including adding or removing students.

Additional teachers can be added, too.  This is especially important for the cohort classes that we have at  Davis and the Middle School.  Many cohorts will have 5-10 'teachers' listed.

Select a class and scroll to the bottom of the page to see the student roster.

Please check to see that all of your students are  listed.   Let me know if you have  anyone missing.  This is a quick fix.

You can edit your own rosters as desired.

Troubleshooting for iPad:
-Check to make sure that your are signed in to your school Apple ID.

-Your iPad should have the latest update installed for Apple Classroom to work.  This may be found at Settings -> General -> Software Update.   Your iPad may need to be plugged in to fully install.

-If your classes to not appear AND you are signed in to your school Apple ID, try signing out of your account and then right back in.

-If a student does not show up on your roster, please let me know.  I can get that fixed right away.

Other Notes:

- Teacher AND Student devices must be logged in to their student 'managed' Apple ID in order for Apple Classroom to work.  Every student and staff member has a Managed Apple ID.

- Once a roster is built in Apple School Manager, the class will show up on all teachers' iPads and laptops.   The student devices are automatically enrolled so no 'invitation' is needed any more.  The student device does not need to be  touched to make this happen.  This is a zero-touch deployment method of Apple Classroom!

-The Apple Classroom app only needs to be installed on the teacher device.  It may be downloaded from Self Service.

-Apple Schoolwork is for iPad only.  This needs to be installed  on both  teacher  and student devices  to  use.

A recap:

Apple  School Manager - a website that teachers can use to manage  their classroom  rosters.

Apple Classroom  -  a classroom  engagement tool.  This works for both iPad and laptop.

Apple Schoolwork - a learning management system for iPad.   It works well with most apps on the iPad.

Zoom Screen Sharing on a student laptop

Are you having troubles sharing your screen in a Zoom meeting from your laptop?

A quick change of your settings should fix this.

Step ONE

Open System Preferences

->   click on Security & Privacy

Step TWO

At the top of the page, click on Privacy

->  scroll down to Screen Recording

Does the screen look like this? (see picture)
If YES, then go to the next step.
If NO, then go to Step FOUR.
Step THREE

JOIN or Start a Zoom meeting.

Share your screen.
You should get a screen that looks similar to this.
(see picture)

Click on Open System Preferences

Step FOUR

Return to

System Preferences -> Security &  Privacy ->
         Privacy -> Screen Recording ->

Check the Zoom box. (see picture)

If  Chrome or Quicktime are listed here, you can check them, too.

Step FIVE

Checking the Zoom checkbox will require you to leave the Zoom meeting.

When you return, you will now be able to share your screen in a Zoom meeting.

FYI:  If necessary for class, the teacher can limit participant screen sharing, and can Turn off/on this feature in their Settings.

A bonus note:

System Preferences -> Security &  Privacy ->Privacy

This is also where you can also 'enable' your microphone and camera to use in Zoom meetings.

YouTube without the distractions

Are you looking to direct your students to a YouTube video for a lesson, but want to eliminate the advertisements and 'suggested' follow-up videos?

If so, then Quietube is for you.

The steps are very quick.

I will show the directions here with Chrome

1. Start at the quietube.com website.
Drag the icon to your bookmarks bar.

(This only needs to be done the very first time you use it.  The icon will stay in your bookmarks bar.)

viewpure.com also works the same way.
2. Open any desired YouTube video.

Then click on the quietube icon in your bookmarks bar.

Copy the quietube address shown.
3. Share with your students.

Here, I create a QR code for students to scan.

My go-to site to create them is qrstuff.comgoqr.me will also work.  Paste in your 'new' address and download the qrcode image.  Print out and post the code for your students to scan with their iPads.

The video will open in the Safari on iPad.

This link can also be sent through a LMS such as Google Classroom, Seesaw, or a Google Site, among many other options.

________________
Update posted on 10/28/2020:

Here is an example video played shown with different streaming options:
on YouTube (original)
on ViewPure (Purify)
on Vimeo
embedded in Google Slides (no sign-in needed to view)

          on Vidyard

SafeYouTube has been blocked by a number of districts for problems that it has had.  Their 'update' to Video.Link may be an effort to solve those issues, but it has, in turn, created other challenges.  I would recommend avoiding using it for the time being.

It is not good practice for K-2 students to use Youtube directly.  It would be better practice to use a one of the options above OR select a different streaming platform such as Loom or Microsoft Stream OR  embed videos in resources such as Flipgrid or Blogger that are not ad-based.

ClassLink - Basics for families

Below are a few basics about using ClassLink on iPad:

For most of our students, signing into ClassLink is a routine part of their day.

Students may also sign in from any web browser at launchpad.classlink.com

Older students can login using their school Google account.  Our younger students are provided a Quickcard for an easier login.
(see picture)

Hold the Quickcard in front of the camera to get logged in.

Replacement cards can be provided by your student's classroom teacher.
Each student will have different applications available to them depending on their building, grade level, or class.

Teachers will be sharing out what resources will be available for their students in ClassLink.

Many building or class links may be found already in ClassLink.  These are an important part of our classroom and remote learning environments.

Common Errors:

If you have a general resource website - something that does not need a password - listed in ClassLink, you may need to open it in Safari for Zoom or other non-website links.  See screenshot below:

Zoom - Getting Students Connected on iPad

Zoom is a videoconference tool that our teachers frequently use with remote learning.

Here are the basics to getting connected to a Zoom meeting:
(The video is less than 3 minutes long)

Before getting started, make sure that the Zoom app is installed on the device.

On our student iPads, this may be found in Self Service.
Teachers will be sharing out more than one way to connect to their Zoom Room.  Use what works best for you.
Every meeting has an ID and Passcode.

Teachers may re-use this same code for every meeting.
Teachers may share out a direct link from a website or document.

Tap on the link to open the Zoom Room.
Every student iPad can 'read' a QR Code directly from the Camera App.

1. Open the Camera App.
2. Point the iPad at the code.
3. Tap on the link that pops up.

If you have difficulties, please contact your teacher or send a request to techhelp@grinnell-k12.org

We will work to make sure that you are successful.

_____________________________________

Common errors:

When opening Zoom for the first time, it may ask to access to the camera and microphone.

If you select 'Don't Allow' you will NOT be able to use the camera or microphone with Zoom.

_________________
If you are getting a pop up like this, it is related to signing in to Zoom.
You should not need to sign in to join a Zoom meeting.
It is not recommended, but the host can turn this on so that all participants do need to sign in.
